Why Do I Have A Toothache?
Toothaches happen for a number of reasons. But most of the time it is due to an infection that has reached the nerve of your tooth. The bacteria from the infection multiply over time and grow. Once it reached the inner canals of your tooth it quickly spread through the root and into your jawbone! As the bacteria grow in number, the pressure builds which causes that constant throbbing toothache. Oftentimes you will experience more pain when you’re lying down because the blood pressure is greater in your head region when you lie down.
Once we diagnose that you have a toothache due to bacterial infection, we typically will prescribe you a round of antibiotics to help your immune system fight off the infection. This will take about seven days, where on the 3rd day you should experience moderate pain relief.
After the round of antibiotics, we will determine if your tooth will need a root canal or possibly extraction and implant.
What to Expect When you Arrive
To properly evaluate the problem an X-ray of the affected area, along with a 15 to 30 minute examination, is necessary to truly define the issue at hand. Within those 30 minutes, Dr. Hsu will evaluate your dental situation and give you a clear plan of what needs to be done to have you feeling comfortable again.
