What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a custom-made cap that fits over your existing tooth. It restores the tooth’s shape, size, and strength while looking completely natural. Think of it as a protective helmet for a damaged tooth. Crowns are one of the most reliable and long-lasting restorations in dentistry.

πŸ›‘οΈ

Protects

Shields a weakened or cracked tooth from further damage and potential extraction.

πŸ”„

Restores

Brings back full chewing function so you can eat comfortably on both sides again.

πŸ’ͺ

Strengthens

Reinforces the tooth structure so it can handle normal biting forces for years to come.

When Do You Need a Dental Crown?

βœ… Cracked or Broken Tooth β€” a crown holds the pieces together and prevents the crack from spreading
βœ… Large Cavity or Filling β€” when a filling would take up more than half the tooth, a crown is stronger and more reliable
βœ… After a Root Canal β€” the tooth becomes brittle after treatment and needs a crown for protection
βœ… Cosmetic Improvement β€” severely discolored or misshapen teeth can be covered with a natural-looking crown
βœ… Dental Implant Restoration β€” a crown is placed on top of the implant post to complete the replacement tooth

The Crown Process at Crystal Lake Dental

1

Consultation + Digital Scan

We examine the tooth, take digital X-rays, and capture a 3D impression with our iTero scanner. No goopy molds. We’ll discuss the best crown material for your situation.

2

Prep + Temporary Crown

We gently reshape the tooth to make room for the crown and place a comfortable temporary. Your custom crown is fabricated at a top dental lab (or milled same-day with CEREC).

3

Permanent Placement

We remove the temporary, check the fit and color match of your permanent crown, and bond it securely in place. You’ll leave with a tooth that looks and feels natural.

Dental Crown FAQs

How long do dental crowns last?

With proper care, dental crowns typically last 10 to 15 years. Some patients keep their crowns for 20+ years with good oral hygiene, regular checkups, and avoiding habits like chewing ice.

Does getting a dental crown hurt?

No. We use local anesthesia to completely numb the area. Most patients feel zero pain during the procedure. Some mild sensitivity for a few days afterward is normal and resolves quickly.

Are same-day crowns available?

Yes. We offer CEREC same-day crowns for many cases. Your crown is designed, milled, and placed in a single visit using our in-office technology. No temporary crown, no second appointment.

How much does a dental crown cost?

Dental crowns at Crystal Lake Dental range from $1,200 to $1,800 depending on the material. We offer financing through CareCredit and Cherry, with monthly payments as low as $50.

Does insurance cover dental crowns?

Most dental insurance plans cover crowns at approximately 50% after your deductible. We verify your benefits before treatment and file all claims on your behalf. HSA and FSA funds are accepted.

How do I care for my dental crown?

Treat it like a natural tooth. Brush twice daily, floss around the crown every day, and keep up with regular checkups. Avoid chewing ice, hard candy, or other hard objects to extend the life of your crown.
